Not far away, Nelson Mandela is honoured with
a beautiful garden near the Civic Hall

I noted various buildings of interest on my walkabout Leeds

Catholic Cathedral, Leeds

City Museum, Leeds

Leeds Town Hall

Leeds Minster

There's a picturesque waterfront along the River Aire

A must see building is the Corn Exchange--it's what's inside that counts.

Of course, there's lots of shopping in any city.

I enjoyed a Sunday pie and mash in the city...

but at other times I ate in the Kirkgate Market and browsed the various stands and shops.

Burgh Castle and Roman Fort Norfolk England UK

Photo above: Wall of Roman Fort at Burgh Castle

I got off the bus from Great Yarmouth at Butts Lane and followed the signs to the church and Roman Fort

The church of Burgh Castle is St Peter and St Paul. It is close to the car park and on the path to the Roman Fort. Most of the church dates to the 1200s to 1400s. The parish is currently in the district of Great Yarmouth in the county of Norfolk.

Burgh Castle Roman Fort dates to the 200s and was part of the Roman coastal defense system. Three of the large walls can still be seen.

I walked around the fort and down by the wildlife preserve.

Panorama of the fort below.

Video view of the Roman Fort- See clip below form SuttonTravels on YouTube.

On my way to the village pub, I stopped by the Old School House on Butt Lane. It is a 4-bedroom freehold semi-detached house.

I was ready to warm up at the Queen's Head, which is the Burgh Castle village pub at Church Road and Back Lane. I returned to Great Yarmouth from the bus stop by the pub.

Returning to Great Yarmouth

Castle note- A Norman Castle was built inside the Roman Fort Walls but is no longer there.

Other notes

There are no facilities at the Roman Fort site.
The path around the area is fairly level but slopes down toward the marsh.
There is a boardwalk along the marsh.

Lowestoft Suffolk England UK

Beautiful Lowestoft is the first place in the UK to see the sunrise. It's located at the northern part of the historic county of Suffolk.

I arrived by bus from Great Yarmouth and enjoyed watching the sailboard surfing (aka windsurfing).

If you like surfing, see this video I took from the promenade. Available on SuttonTravels channel on YouTube.

It's hard to get enough of the coastal views.

There's a nice beach as well.

I walked along the pier and along the promenade -- a few photos

A sign tells of the historic fishing industry and its capacity to deliver fresh fish to London via rail the same day. London is  about 100 miles away.

The Lowestoft railway station is located near the pier.

I returned to Great Yarmouth. My next stop was Burgh Castle and the Roman Fort.

Great Yarmouth Norfolk England UK

Great Yarmouth, also called Yarmouth, is a popular resort town in the historic county of Norfolk on the east coast of England.

I arrived by train from Leeds, through Peterborough and Norwich.

Although it was November, it was a nice day at the beach.

Several attraction were closed but here are a few places recommended for families.

There is a Royal Aquarium, which I did not see. And the ARC cinema.

In the city centre, there are a variety of shops and a market place.

Here's a short video of the shopping street walking from the beach to the city shopping  centre.

If you are interested in history, there are several places to visit. Here are a few examples.

Great Yarmouth Minster

Near the old Row Houses- An English Heritage site

St George's Theatre

Greek Orthodox Church of Saint Spyridon

And a glimpse of the medieval town with a tower and parts of the old wall.

This monument commemorates the Trafalgar Victory on 21 October 1805. The city remembers Lord Nelson who was born in 1758 in Norfolk.

I enjoyed a full English breakfast and fish n chips

I took two day trips on busses from the central depot.

On one trip I went south to Lowestoft

and the other trip was over to  Burgh Castle and the historic Roman Fort
