Canary Wharf London England

Canary Wharf in the Borough of Tower Hamlets is an area of East London, near the Isle of Dogs, that is part of London’s central business district.

It is known for its skyscrapers, such as One Canada Square, which is the third-tallest building in the UK. It is also a major financial centre, home to many banks and corporations.

Canary Wharf was formerly a dockland, where ships from the Canary Islands and other places would unload their cargo.

See the post on the Museum of London - Docklands

Canary Wharf was redeveloped in the 1980s and 1990s into a modern urban area, with shops, restaurants, parks, and gardens. One of the attractions in Canary Wharf is the Crossrail Roof Gardens, which is a public park on top of a railway station, with plants from different climates and regions.

Mudchute Park and Farm

Mudchute Park and Farm is a welcome restful and educational greenspace in the Isle of Dogs, Tower Hamlets, London. I took these photos in the afternoon of 10 May 2023 as I was exploring the Isle of Dogs.

As you can see in the photo above, you aren't far from the city; however, when wandering about the park, it is easy to feel like you are in the countryside.

There is a nice variety of farm animals.

Signs illustrate the trails, what you can see in the meadow, and offer information from World War II when the residents of the Isle of Dogs suffered greatly from German bombs and rockets.

Museum of London-Docklands

The Museum of London Docklands is housed in No.1 Warehouse of the West India Docks on the Isle of Dogs. The Warehouse exhibit contains objects, storyboards, and videos to illustrate the activities of the dockworkers at the Port of London. These workers, known as dockers, unloaded the ships and stored goods like sugar, rum, and tobacco in the warehouse.

Barrels and large scales are examples of the objects.

The West India Docks were the largest group of docks in the world in the early 1800s.

Recreated scenes  illustrate aspects of life in the docklands with objects like tools, lanterns, ropes, and furniture.

London's docks were bombed during World War II. Small steel Consul shelters were provided for those who needed to work on the docks.

The museum includes educational information on the slave trade. Some of the goods stored in the warehouse were came from the Caribbean where African slaves worked the plantations. Those who traded in goods such as sugar became rich in part because of slave labour.

Slavery was abolished in the British Empire in 1833. The African slavery system lasted about 300 years but the effects of the slavery system continue.

Royal Park- Brompton Cemetery London England

Brompton Cemetery is not a typical Royal Park. During the time of Queen Victoria, Brompton was a village near the pulsing city of London where people thronged to work as the Industrial Revolution gained steam.

The churchyard were filled; thus the need for more cemeteries. Brompton Cemetery holds over 200,000 Londoners who have rested here since 1840.

One famous woman has a special spot, Emmeline Pankhurst.

The Temple is located within that part of London known as the City of London and is named for the medieval Knights Templar.

The building around the courtyard are associated with the legal profession.

The Temple Church, built by the Knights Templar, dates to 10 February 1185 when it was consecrated by Patriarch Heraclius of Jerusalem.

The Knights Templar were suppressed in the 1300s.

Early in the 1600s, King James I granted the area to the legal societies.

The location of the church and related buildings can be seen on the Google Map of the area.

Regent's Park, London, England

Regent's Park, London, England
2023 by Geoffrey Sutton

Regent's Park is one of London's eight Royal Parks. In addition to walkways and formal gardens, it has the largest outdoor sports grounds.

The lake, pictured above, is large enough for boating.

In addition to trees along the pathways,

there are speciality gardens to enjoy.

In the Spring, you may see some 12,000 roses in Queen Mary's Gardens.

And more...

There are numerous benches to enjoy relaxation or a lunch.

There is a small café.

And the toilets were clean and in good working order when I visited 5 May 2023
