The Eagle and Child Pub Oxford England

After spending most of the day at the nearby Ashmolean Museum, I stopped for early Fish 'n Chips at the historic pub, The Eagle and Child.

I'm in the corner by the fireplace. On the wall above are plaques and photos referring to the Inkling's Club, which links two famous friends, C S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien and other friends who met on Tuesday mornings to discuss their writings.

The Fish 'n Chips were good. At the time, it was a Nicholson's Pub owned by St John's College.

The pub dates to the 1600s and may have been there when Oxford was the Royalist capital during the Civil War.

It was a meeting in June 1950 when C. S. Lewis handed out proofs for his most famous work, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Visiting Befordshire, England, UK

Ireland (see above) is a hamlet in Bedfordshire.

The first Roundabout in the UK was built around 1909 and found in the first Garden City of Letchworth.

The Abbey Church of St Leonard of Old Warden in Bedfordshire. The church dates to the 1100s. The current building is mostly from the 1200s with additions between the 14th and 16th centuries.

The Ongley Mausoleum in the churchyard.

I had lunch with cousins at the John O'Gaunt Inn in the small village of Sutton in Bedfordshire. The Inn was created from thatched cottages that date to the 1700s.

Ye Olde Fighting Cocks St Albans UK

 Welcome to Britain's Oldest Pub!

Ye Olde Fighting Cock/ Geoff Sutton, 1980

It's not the only pub claiming to be the oldest but it is old and that's part of the charm.

How old? Well, sometime in the 700s there was a pub here. Today's pub dates from the 1,000s.

Where is it? Conveniently located across the street from St Albans Cathedral. There's underground tunnels to the Cathedral for the convenience of the monks. Google Map Link.

What's in a name? Cock fighting was here in the 1800-1900s. It was a popular activity for some 600 years. The Cock Pit was about 8 x 10 feet.

What about Celebs?

It's claimed Oliver Cromwell slept here during the Civil War 91642-1651).

Part of the foundations link to the Palace of King Offa, King of the Mercians c793.

Address: 16 Abbey Mill Lane, St Albans, AL3 4HE UK
