Ring of Kerry and Waterville Ireland

The Ring of Kerry, is a 179-kilometer-long circular tourist route in County Kerry, also in southwestern Ireland.

Waterville
In Irish, the town is called Coireán, which translates to “little cauldron” or “little whirlpool,” a nod to the shape of nearby Ballinskelligs Bay.

The signs mentions the actor, Charlie Chaplin.

The legendary comedian Charlie Chaplin and his family visited Waterville in 1959. They continued to return for over a decade, and the local community embraced this connection. In 2011, with permission from the Chaplin estate, they launched the Charlie Chaplin Comedy Film Festival.

Blarney Castle Ireland

Blarney Castle, located near Cork in Ireland, is a medieval stronghold with a rich history and intriguing features. Here are some key points about this iconic castle:

Origins and Construction:The castle’s origins date back to before 1200, when a timber house stood on the site. However, no evidence remains of this early structure.
Around 1210, the timber house was replaced by a stone fortification.
The current keep, which stands today, was built by the MacCarthy of Muskerry dynasty in 1446.

The Blarney Stone: One of the most famous features of Blarney Castle is the Blarney Stone.
According to folklore, kissing the Blarney Stone bestows the gift of flattery and eloquence upon the kisser.

Tourists visiting the castle can hang upside-down over a sheer drop to reach the stone and receive this special gift.

Ownership and Restoration:Over the centuries, Blarney Castle changed hands several times.
In the early 18th century, it was purchased by Sir James Jeffreys, the governor of Cork City.
The Jefferyes family later built Blarney House, a large mansion near the 15th-century keep. The current mansion, built in a Scottish baronial style, overlooks a nearby lake.

Current State:Blarney Castle is now a partial ruin, but some accessible rooms and battlements remain.
Visitors can explore the castle’s history, climb its towers, and, of course, kiss the famous Blarney Stone.

Canary Wharf London England

Canary Wharf in the Borough of Tower Hamlets is an area of East London, near the Isle of Dogs, that is part of London’s central business district.

It is known for its skyscrapers, such as One Canada Square, which is the third-tallest building in the UK. It is also a major financial centre, home to many banks and corporations.

Canary Wharf was formerly a dockland, where ships from the Canary Islands and other places would unload their cargo.

See the post on the Museum of London - Docklands

Canary Wharf was redeveloped in the 1980s and 1990s into a modern urban area, with shops, restaurants, parks, and gardens. One of the attractions in Canary Wharf is the Crossrail Roof Gardens, which is a public park on top of a railway station, with plants from different climates and regions.

Mudchute Park and Farm

Mudchute Park and Farm is a welcome restful and educational greenspace in the Isle of Dogs, Tower Hamlets, London. I took these photos in the afternoon of 10 May 2023 as I was exploring the Isle of Dogs.

As you can see in the photo above, you aren't far from the city; however, when wandering about the park, it is easy to feel like you are in the countryside.

There is a nice variety of farm animals.

Signs illustrate the trails, what you can see in the meadow, and offer information from World War II when the residents of the Isle of Dogs suffered greatly from German bombs and rockets.

Stone Town Zanzibar Tanzania

We anchored off shore and arrived at the port of Stone Town also known as Zanzibar City, which is the capital of Zanzibar--an island in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Tanzania.

It's a busy city with lots of human and vehicular traffic. We began our visit by walking along the coast. One of the interesting architectural World Heritage Sites is the Old Dispensary. Indian architect, Hasham Patel began the work as a hospital to honour Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee.

A little further along is the Old Fort.

A sign explains the fort's history.

Stone Town is a maze of alleys. On our way to the site of the old slave market, we saw a variety of the famous doors. Here are two examples.

Jaws Corner is a popular café where people come for coffee, conversation, and board games.

Our sunny day paused for a soaking rain. Eventually, we got to the former slave market and Anglican church site. I posted these photos on a separate page.

After spending time learning about the former slave trade, we walked through the Dara Jani Souk and back to the port.

On the next day, we visited the Jozani Forest--home to the Red Colobus monkeys.

Then, our African voyage headed south-- see more of our African Cruise.
