Roman Aqueduct

Segovia, located in the Castile and León region of Spain, boasts a rich history that spans centuries. The city's origins trace back to the Iberian settlement around 700 BCE, which was later captured by the Romans around 80 BCE. Under Roman rule, Segovia flourished, and one of its most iconic structures, the Aqueduct of Segovia, was constructed. This remarkable feat of engineering, built during the reign of Emperor Trajan in the late 1st century CE, transported water from the Frío River to the city and remains one of the best-preserved Roman aqueducts.

The aqueduct, with its 167 arches and granite construction, stands as a testament to Roman ingenuity and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Segovia's historical significance continued through the medieval period, serving as a royal residence and a center for textile production. The city's fortunes waned after a plague in the 16th century but revived during the railway era in the 19th century.
