Plaza Mayor, Madrid Spain

The Plaza Mayor in Madrid

is a historic square that dates back to the 15th century when it was originally called "Plaza del Arrabal" and served as a marketplace. Its transformation began in 1561 under King Philip II, with architect Juan de Herrera designing the remodel. Construction was completed in 1619 during the reign of Philip III. Over the years, the plaza has endured three major fires, with the most devastating one in 1790 leading to its reconstruction by Juan de Villanueva.

Today, it is a rectangular square surrounded by uniform three-story buildings with 237 balconies facing inward.

See my YouTube clip for an overview of the plaza on 23 March 2025.
