Museo Nacional del Prado
National Museum in Madrid, Spain
The Museo Nacional del Prado, located in Madrid, Spain, is one of the world's most renowned art museums. It was originally designed in 1785 by architect Juan de Villanueva under the orders of King Charles III to house the Natural History Cabinet. However, its purpose shifted when King Ferdinand VII, encouraged by Queen María Isabel de Braganza, decided to establish it as the Royal Museum of Paintings and Sculptures. The museum officially opened to the public in 1819 and has since evolved into a cultural institution showcasing Spanish and European art.
The Prado's collection is vast and impressive, featuring masterpieces by artists such as Francisco Goya, Diego Velázquez, Hieronymus Bosch, Titian, Peter Paul Rubens, and El Greco. Highlights include Velázquez's Las Meninas and Bosch's The Garden of Earthly Delights. The museum also houses thousands of drawings, sculptures, and decorative art pieces.
