The Palace of Westminster is also called Westminster Palace, Westminster, and it is commonly known as The Houses of Parliament. It was originally built in 1016. Fire destroyed much of the early structure in 1834. It was then rebuilt between 1840 to 1876.

Westminster is an iconic symbol of the UK, which appears in movies and news stories about Britain or the actions of the UK government. The building has two houses of parliament: The House of Commons and the House of Lords.

The architectural style has been called Perpendicular Gothic Revival--a division of English Gothic architecture.

Westminster Palace is located in the old City of Westminster on the North Bank of the River Thames, which is now a London Borough. The nearby bridge is Westminster Bridge and it is near Westminster underground station. The tower at the western end is the Elizabeth Tower, which houses the Great Clock and the famous Great Bell known as Big Ben.

The statue of King Richard I is in the Old Palace Yard of Westminster Palace. The text refers to him as Coeur de Lion (Lion Heart). The dates of his reign were 1189 - 1199. The statue was completed in 1856. It was damaged during WWII and restored in 2009.
