Miniature Wonderland, Hamburg Germany

A World Class Adventure on Three Floors

Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg Germany

Beginning: The Third Floor

I began my tour on the third floor and didn’t bother with the audio guide or a guided tour. I was immediately amazed by the quality of the scenes—clearly the largest and best miniature villages and cities I have ever seen (I’ve seen several in Europe and the US). The detail in the human figures and scenes of everyday life is remarkably realistic. The technology supports the presentation rather than drawing attention to itself, yet it is genuinely impressive.

Of course, the many locomotives and wagons deserve close inspection, especially as they flawlessly navigate such complex layouts.

In addition, the electronic vehicle system adds considerable realism to the streets and highways, not to mention other modes of transport such as ski lifts, hot air balloons, boats, and jet planes taking off and landing.

Moving Up: Fourth Floor

Later in the day, I reached the fourth floor, where you can both admire the detail of the large scenes viewed from above on the third floor and explore additional layouts representing places such as the western United States and Sweden.

Notes and Suggestions

I arrived early for my 10:00 a.m. ticket at Miniatur Wunderland and was allowed in without any trouble.

Entry is on the second floor of four. You scan your ticket and can pay €0.50 if you want to check your jacket—or, like many people, put it in a locker with your bag.

Lockers. It took me a while to lock my belongings into their combination lock locker system, and I noticed other visitors struggling with it as well.

Refreshments. There’s a cafĂ©; most drinks are around €3 per cup. I took three breaks during the day and enjoyed a reasonably priced lunch of €11.70 for schnitzel, chips, and a drink. There are plenty of places to eat and rest and you can bring your own lunch.

Time.  I finally left at 6:00 p.m., having spent eight hours inside—and even then, I was hurrying to catch the last few scenes on the fourth floor. I honestly can’t see how the three hour average visit time posted online is possible.

Staff. A special mention, all the staff were friendly.

Recommendation. In case there is any doubt, I highly recommend visiting this creative experience.
