Portage Glacier Cruise Alaska

Portage Glacier 2025

The Portage Glacier Lake Cruise takes place on Portage Lake, located about an hour’s drive southeast of Anchorage, Alaska. The cruise operates aboard the mv Ptarmigan, the only boat permitted on the lake, offering an exclusive and intimate experience.

Lake View from Shore

This seasonal excursion runs from May through September, with up to five departures daily, making it accessible for a variety of travel itineraries.

Along the way, we stop for a close look at one of the waterfalls.

This short video clip from my YouTube account gives you a quick look at the glacier.

Each cruise lasts approximately one hour and brings passengers within 300 yards of the glacier’s towering, icy face. Along the way, you’ll glide past floating icebergs and witness the stark beauty of glacial terrain. A U.S. Forest Service guide provides live narration, sharing insights into the glacier’s history, the effects of climate change, and the surrounding Chugach National Forest ecosystem.

Wildlife sightings are possible during the cruise, with birds often seen soaring overhead and the occasional dramatic splash from calving ice. The experience is both educational and awe-inspiring, offering a rare chance to observe a rapidly retreating glacier up close.

Closer view of the Glacier

Due to the chilly glacial air, it’s recommended to dress warmly. Layers, a windproof jacket, gloves, a hat, and a scarf will help keep you comfortable during the cruise. Even in summer, the lake’s proximity to the glacier ensures brisk conditions.
