Anchorage’s Alaska Zoo is not your average animal park. It’s a rugged, soulful sanctuary nestled in the boreal forest at the base of the Chugach Mountains, offering a uniquely Alaskan experience that blends wildlife conservation, education, and raw northern beauty.
The American Bald Eagle exhibit is a great example of seeing these iconic birds up close.
Unlike many American zoos that showcase global biodiversity, the Alaska Zoo focuses on Arctic and sub-Arctic species, many of which are rescued, orphaned, or injured and cannot survive in the wild A C. This gives the zoo a strong ethical and rehabilitative mission.
Of course there are bears. We saw black and brown bears on the day we visited.
I took a few photos of the brown bears--a close up shows the size of their bear claws.
There's so much more...

Some birds are in cages and other's wander around the acreage. Some are too difficult to photograph because of the cages.

If you have time in the area, I do recommend adding the zoo to your itinerary.
The gift shop has reasonable prices.
