LIttle Rock Nine Arkansas

In the last few years, I've been reading more about the African experience in the United States. One book, Elizabeth and Hazel: Two Women of Little Rock, spurred my interest in visiting Little Rock, Arkansas.

First, I stopped at the Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site.

It's a small museum across the road from the attractive campus of Central High School where students still attend.

The museum contains storyboards, which tell the story of America's segregated schools.

In 1954, the U S Supreme Court in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, ruled that racial segregation was unconstitutional.

In 1957, nine Black students prepared to enter Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. But they were barred by the Arkansas National Guard.

The black students faced fierce opposition from the crowd. The classic photo reveals a sea of hostile and otherwise unfriendly white faces.

These black  students stayed away from school until federal troops could safely escort them into the High School.

Next, I went to the capitol building to locate the sculpture, Testament. It is a powerful image of the Little Rock Nine attempting to go to school. They face the capitol building, a symbol of government opposition to desegregation in many states.

The collection features American and Native American artists.

Many works include a humorous cultural commentary.

Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art Arkansas

Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art invites contemplation on art and beauty amidst a peaceful setting in the heartland of America. It's named for the clear water spring that bubbles nearby and the artistic museum bridge, which is a part of the architectural work of Moshe Safdie. The museum opened 11 November, 2011.

I have taken my recent photos with my Lumix Camera.

Inside the museum are works of early to modern American art, which are part of a permanent collection free to appreciate courtesy of Walmart.

The museum includes a 50,000 volume library, special exhibitions, and a museum store all set within an attractive 120-acre park.

In November 2019, we saw the special exhibit, Crystals in Art.

We also saw the Infinity Mirrored Room--My Heart is Dancing into the Universe
by Yayoi Kusama.

Art continues outside on the sculpture trail.

And there are miles of walking trails, which encourage the appreciation of the natural beauty.

St Louis Art Museum

St Louis Art Museum Photo Geoff W Sutton 8 July 2016

The St Louis Art Museum is worth a visit if you have even a few extra hours in St Louis. It is conveniently located in Forest Park nearby other places of interest. I would rate this 9 of 10 stars for a pleasant, educational, affordable art Museum experience.

Admission is free. Check for the most recent hours. Recently, hours were limited to 10-5 most days, later on Friday and closed Mondays. Parking is free in some lots and at a cost in the garage.

The collection includes more than 30,000 works. You can see a few thousand online (www.slam.org).

There are works and activities of interest for children on up. The Museum shops contain some inexpensive , some unique, and of course some expensive items. As with most places I found the cost of dining rather expensive compared to what is available in the community. But you can take a lunch. There are plenty of picnic tables outside.

The museum hosts special events and you can arrange group tours. As with most places, check online for the latest information.

You will find a diverse collection of objects from many parts of the world as well as local works.

The collection includes examples of art spanning thousands of years.
